Julie Ann Freischlag, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief,The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md., Elected SVS Treasurer

CHICAGO (July 18, 2008) —

Dr. Julie Ann Freischlag was elected 2008-2009 treasurer of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) during the Vascular Annual Meeting on June 6, 2008. Dr. Freischlag is the surgeon-in-chief at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. She is the William Stewart Halsted Professor and Chair of the department of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

“Dr. Freischlag is a well respected surgeon and educator, both nationally and internationally,” said Dr. G. Patrick Clagett, SVS president. “Her dedicated leadership to the surgical field, especially the specialty of vascular surgery is exceptional. Through her mentorship of numerous vascular surgeons, she has made an immeasurable impact on the specialty. The society is honored to have her join the executive committee.”

Dr. Freischlag is the editor of the Archives of Surgery and the associate editor of the American Journal of Surgery. She serves on the editorial boards of the Annuals of Vascular Surgery and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

In addition to her dedication to the SVS, Dr. Freischlag is involved with the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Women’s Association, Association for Academic Surgery, Association of Women Surgeons, Chesapeake Vascular Society and the Society of Surgical Chairs.

She is currently the principal investigator on several major grants including the O.V.E.R. Trial, Open vs. Endo-Vascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms. Her research interests lie in the effects of smoking on arterial and venous endothelium causes of atherosclerosis and intimal dysplasia.

Dr. Freischlag earned her medical degree from Rush University in Chicago, Ill., and finished her vascular surgery fellowship at UCLA.
