G. Patrick Clagett, MD, University Of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Elected SVS President

chicago (July 18, 2008) —

Dr. G. Patrick Clagett was elected 2008-2009 president of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) during the Vascular Annual Meeting on June 6, 2008. Nationally recognized for his experience and leadership, he leads the country’s largest vascular surgeon society with 2,600 members.

“Dr. Clagett’s accomplishments in the vascular field make him the ideal leader to continue the society’s role as the unified voice for vascular surgery in the U.S. and throughout the world,” said Dr. K. Wayne Johnston, outgoing president of the SVS. “His professional career has focused on advancing excellence and innovation in vascular surgery and his efforts for the society have been just as impressive. He is currently spearheading an effort to increase diversity in vascular surgery by attracting more women and minorities to the specialty to better serve the changing population, address disparities in vascular care, and to practice in a more culturally competent manner. We are fortunate to have someone of this caliber stepping forward to lead our members.”

His accomplishments include serving as chairman, division of vascular surgery, head, section of vascular surgery, and professor with the department of surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He is a professor, department of surgery, at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. Dr. Clagett has been named one of the best doctors in Dallas by D-Magazine from 2002 through 2007.

Dr. Clagett served on the editorial boards of Journal of Vascular Surgery (Assistant Editor), Cardiovascular Surgery, and served as Associate Editor of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. He is currently on the editorial boards of Surgery, Stroke, Vascular (formerly Cardiovascular Surgery), Vascular & Endovascular Surgery and the American Journal of Surgery; and he is editor of Vascular Surgery Outlook.

In addition to his dedication to the SVS, Dr. Clagett is involved with the American College of Surgeons, American Surgical Association, Association for Academic Surgery, Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery, Society of University Surgeons, Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, which he served as president from 1997-1998. He formerly served as a director on the American Board of Surgery (ABS) from 1997 to 2003 and chairman of the Vascular Surgery Board of the ABS from 1998 to 1993. He also is currently a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for Surgery.

Dr. Clagett’s research interests include surgical management of cerebrovascular disease, blood biomaterial interactions, the clinical utility of new anti-thrombotic agents and vascular prosthetic infections. He earned his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Virginia; finished his general surgery residency at the University of Michigan; served as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School; and completed a vascular fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
