Omaida C. Velazquez, MD, University Of Miami Leonard M. Miller School Of Medicine, Miami, Elected To Distinguished Fellows Status, Society For Vascular Surgery

CHICAGO (June 18, 2008) —

Dr. Omaida C. Velazquez was elected to distinguished fellow status of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) at the 62nd Vascular Annual Meeting on June 5, 2008. She is an assistant professor of vascular surgery and the chief of vascular and endovascular surgery at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. She also is the director of the vascular laboratory at the University of Miami Hospital. Dr. Velazquez’s election was based upon her scholarly research activities, creative professional activities and broadly recognized teaching excellence.

“We are proud to include Dr. Velazquez as a distinguished fellow in the Society for Vascular Surgery,” said G. Patrick Clagett, MD, SVS president. “She exemplifies the qualities and commitment to excellence our membership subscribes to in vascular health care.”

Dr. Velazquez has published in over 60 peer-reviewed publications on both clinical and basic science research topics, as well as 52 abstracts and 20 book chapters and reviews. Dr. Velazquez received the 2001 Von Liebig Foundation Award for Excellence in Vascular Surgery, the 2003 University of Pennsylvania Faculty Research Award and the 2003 Joel J. Roslyn Research Award.

In addition to her dedication to the SVS, Dr. Velazquez is involved with the American College of Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, Association of Women Surgeons, International Academy of Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis, International Society for Vascular Surgery, the Society of University Surgeons.
